Dave Grohl took his directorial skills beyond Soundgarden music videos for his first documentary film entitled Sound City, which tells of the history of Sound City Studios, a recording studio in the Los Angeles area. Grohl has a closeness to the studio, having recorded smash hit Nevermind with Nirvana there in the early 90s. The film has gotten mostly good reviews since it debuted, and now this week the soundtrack follows along with it.

Entitled Sound City: Real to Reel, it’s a who’s who of classic and modern rock, with the likes of Tim Commerford, Taylor Hawkins, Brad Wilk, Stevie Nicks, Alain Johannes, Corey Taylor, Josh Homme, Krist Novoselic, Pat Smear, Paul McCartney, Trent Reznor, and of course Grohl all over the disc. These names were just some of the ones that helped do interviews for the documentary, and then created these accompanying songs.

Clocking in with 11 songs and nearly an hour in duration, the soundtrack erupts with “Heaven and All”, with the likes of Robert Levon Been, Grohl, and Peter Hayes. It’s a straightforward piece with a garage rock quality, as well as plenty of brash, sharp guitars and a bombastic, explosive finish. “Time Slowing Down” has a very Grohl quality to it, and also features Rage Against the Machine buddies Commerford and Wilk, as well as Chris Goss. It’s rather sleepy, or at least subdued, with Grohl and Goss exchanging dissonant vocals until the more charged up chorus strikes. Grohl is only a bit player vocally, stepping back to let the other musicians shine. The Rage components of this tune don’t overpower, and actually play their most melodic yet.

“You Can’t Fix This” features Stevie Nicks on vocals, as well as Hawkins, Grohl, and Rami Jaffee. Nicks sings of avoiding the devil and losing friendships (which could possibly be an illusion to drug use) against a pretty musical backdrop. Grohl’s cooing backing vocals, although sparse, are effective and sound great against Nick’s croon. “The Man That Never Was”, with Grohl, Hawkins, Smear, Nate Mendel, and Rick Springfield is appropriately very Foo Fighters-esque, even though Springfield is on vocals.

A more amusing moment on the soundtrack comes in the form of “Your Wife is Calling”, with Grohl, Hawkins, Johannes, Smear, and Lee Ving. It’s a punk rocker with a silly lyrical bent, and is reminiscent of early, mid-90s Foos musically. “From Can to Can’t” has a lineup of Grohl, Rick Nielsen, Scott Reeder, and Stone Sour’s Corey Taylor on vocals. Taylor’s emotive delivery and lyrical melancholy goes a long way to guiding this song, which is quite beautiful.

“Centipede”, with Goss, Grohl, Johannes, and Josh Homme on vocals, is a dizzying little acoustic riff that showcases Homme’s eerie delivery quite well. It sounds a bit like an unplugged Queens of the Stone Age. Grohl’s touch comes in when the electric instruments kick in halfway through the song, Homme’s voice a sturdy murmur against the ascending riffage. “A Trick with No Sleeve” is built from the trio of Grohl, Homme, and Johannes, who takes the mic in this drum-heavy and trippy rocker.

Next is “Cut Me Some Slack”, the track that led the Nirvana reunion with Paul McCartney on vocals during the song’s debut at the 12 12 12 Hurricane Sandy benefit concert. The studio version manages to evoke the same energy and presence that its live counterpart did, with indulgent guitar solos and crisp vocals from McCartney. The song builds and builds to quite a satisfactory conclusion.

“If I Were Me”, with Jessy Green, Grohl, Jaffee, and Jim Keltner, Grohl proves his acoustic prowess, taking a rare lead vocals position. If you enjoy the lighter Foo Fighters offerings over the years (like disc two of In Your Honor), you’ll love this one, especially with the light piano touches. This is actually one of the softest Grohl moments in probably his whole career. The last track, “Mantra”, is the daunting combination of Grohl, Homme, and Reznor. The bouncy backdrop of piano and light guitar fits in against Grohl’s subtle delivery, which is only augmented by Trent Reznor’s backing vocals. Reznor and Grohl weave their voices into a delicate tapestry supported by percussive beats and occasional piano trills midway through this one. It has the big layering crescendo typical of Reznor’s work, and is quite impressive. It also features a lengthy Nine Inch Nails-esque bass and effects-heavy breakdown.

With an impressive lineup of some of the best musicians still in the game, there’s virtually nothing to dislike about Sound City: Real to Reel. The influence of all of these extraordinarily talented musicians means that you don’t just hear the exclusive musical leanings of Grohl. From the eerie acoustics of Josh Homme’s work, the sullenness of Corey Taylor’s contribution, and the gradation of Reznor’s tune, you can tell that these were all collaborations between these musicians. Grohl may have been commandeering force behind the film and the soundtrack, but he lets plenty of others take the reins, resulting in a one hour musical tour de force.
Dave Grohl said in a new interview with Billboard that he has “a crazy idea of what I want to do with the next [Foo Fighters] record and how we record it. It’s not conventional. It won’t be a conventional record.”

Taylor Hawkins added, “just sort of a germ in Dave’s head at this point. He says he’s got a lot of ideas. We haven’t really gotten down to brass tacks. I don’t know what the path will be. It’s always a little different, which is good.”

Los Angeles may be a centerpiece of musical excellence, but the Pacific Northwest is home to a caliber of talent that borders on outrageous. Rock enthusiasts and Seattleites familiar with Jeff Angell’s burning blues guitar & vocals in The Missionary Position will find an irresistible gravity in the collective musical caliber and dynamics of Walking Papers. Buoyed powerfully by the thundering drums of Barrett Martin from Screaming Trees and legendary bassist Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses, Loaded and more, the band has quickly proven themselves to be among the more promising musical gems of the post-Mayan Apocalypse era with a new album earning high marks in Rock circles and a smoldering live show that serves as ample evidence of the seasoned rockers’ abilities.
There’s a fiery gravity and growl to contend with on Walking Papers’ more front-loaded aggressive side, while a gorgeous, smoky blues thread counters the hard rock impact with a groove-driven sound buoyed by Duff’s rumbling bass and Martin’s percussive versatility. Benjamin Anderson rounds out the lineup with a flourish of keys that gives the production a more classic feel, adding nuanced color to the ample musical firepower.
The band’s debut self-titled album was released last October, and also features Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready, whose work with Martin goes back to their collaboration on the cherished Mad Season record. The band’s collective “workshop” method of songwriting helped propel the musicianship on the album to its highest potential – though it certainly didn’t hurt to have PJ’s lead axeman laying down solos on two tracks.
When Walking Papers rolled through Los Angeles last month in support of the album, Antiquiet performed the proper assortment of occult rituals and sacrifices to pull the guys into the studio for an exclusive Antiquiet Session.
Scott Weiland briefly discussed his ex-bandmates Robert DeLeo (Stone Temple Pilots) and Slash (Velvet Revolver) performing together with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry on Sunday at his show last night in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He mentioned that they had played together recently, and that he loves all of the musicians he has played with in his career. Weiland added that he was not going to make any jokes and that he was being serious when saying he loves all the musicians he’s played with. Here are some fan reviews commented regarding Scott Weiland’s performance last night in New Brunswick, New Jersey:
“Ok. Here’s my two cents. Contrary to recent reports, Scott’s vocals weren’t bad. Was he the best he’s been? No. But he sang pretty well. We all know his voice has gotten more and more nasally over the years, so he kept on that path. There were a couple of botched lyrics, but again, nothing new…and nothing atrocious either. He talked plenty in between songs, sometimes too much for the crowd’s restlessness. He even brought up the Slash & Rob jam with Aerosmith. You can hear it in his voice, it bothered him It was sad at times to hear him talk about STP memories, about what those songs mean to him all the while none of those guys are standing there with him. Which brings me to the next point…his band. Oh my! Scott’s performance with a GOOD band would’ve resulted in a good evening. These guys are just not that good. The drummer constantly missed cues. Doug over plays on EVERY SONG. Jeez!!!!! Give it a rest. Not every song is meant to have a lead guitar noodling all throughout. If you’re going to play STP songs, then, I’m sorry to break it to you, but you HAVE TO LEARN HOW THEY GO. I’m all about trying something different and re-imagining a song, but this was not that. A talent like Scott Weiland (who’s sold millions of records and played with the level of talent that he has in STP & VR) should have no issue getting real professional musicians in a band. How is it possible that he doesn’t realize what this sounds like? Shows like this, despite HIS performance not being bad, really hurt his legacy, reputation and do nothing for his already tainted public perception. Tonight, it wasn’t his fault. This band of his shoulders 100% of the blame. With all that said, to be fair, there were some highlights. I thought Kitchenware & Candybars, Jean Genie & Paralysis were some of the better tunes, as a whole. Again, Scott sounded pretty consistent. But there’s only so much he can do to save the sloppy band behind him. For all the flack that Axl gets for his band of guns for hire (no pun intended), like it or hate it, at least he went out and got guys that could play the songs properly. And you’re right, when we’re used to having the (as you called them) masters play these songs, most would pale in comparison, but even something like Roadhouse Blues was butchered. ”
“I just got home from seeing Scott (and the Wildabouts) at the State Theatre.I am still in (blind) confusion. To say something though, I feel bad for Scott, My favorite frontman ever. The band is made up of talented musicians, and Scott’s voice was top notch tonight, but something about the set and the theater atmosphere filled with ass-holes, really brought the mood down. I did not enjoy this show as much as I anticipated. When I looked back, I saw empty seats and people yelling foul things to Scott and the band. They even got a new drummer for whatever reason (Original Wildabouts Drummer was Sick? Quit the band?). Scott went on rambles after each song, and the audience HATED that. I could not understand a word coming out of his mouth because of all the boos and putdowns. Scott should NOT be doing STP songs live with his band either, especially at a theater venue. It just seemed depressing hearing watered down versions of STP songs. The band really only performs solo/covers well. Scott should really do his solo material and focus more on a new record, and try to build this band from the ground up. Relying on the past will NOT get him anywhere. I know for a fact that 75% of the people in that venue lost respect for Scott. It is quite heartbreaking for me knowing that Scott’s legacy is coming down fast. I even heard that Scott had to be carried to his tour RV after the show tonight. He did seem very loopy on-stage. Not a drunk type though. Not going to jump to conclusions here but… Read between the lines. That’s all I have to say. If Scott comes to a bar or venue like the Stone Pony again touring for his new “Punk” album, I’ll go and see him. If he continues “Purple to the Core”, even a diehard fan like me will not go. It saddens me, and I’m sure it saddens Scott deep down inside too.”
“The show in NJ was awesome. cant say the same about the crowd. thanks for being u. you rocked it, regardless. Congrats on your engagement.”
“Good show. Scott seemed sincere and was trying to tell some of the story behind the songs and people were so rude. One jackass behind me kept yelling for Sin. I’ve seen STP and Scott solo many times and this crowd may take the cake for the biggest bunch of pricks and that’s even after the Grammercy show where all people wanted to hear was STP.”Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10813329872959627499noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7310272336526829356.post-16677536204248889512013-03-12T09:19:00.001-07:002013-03-12T09:22:42.896-07:00Natalie Maines (Dixie Chicks) - Without You (Eddie Vedder Cover)

Possible Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland went on a long rant at his solo show last night in Washington DC. Numerous fans on Twitter claimed Weiland was drunk during his performance. chloesdad said on the BelowEmpty.com forums, “I’ve seen more STP/VR/Scott solo then I can count and this was by far the most painful show I’ve ever been to and that includes a show in which he didn’t even show up (Tampa 2008).”

Weiland’s rant included his thoughts on President Obama, “I think we have an amazing President, he’s just amazing.” He also said, “You’re thinking Scott Weiland is on drugs again…no that was 11 years ago, but I still drink…” This led into a bizarre rant about blogs, which included him asking what a blog was and proclaiming “Peter Jennings is awesome.”

Weiland also discussed Grunge, “People called it Grunge, but it wasn’t Grunge…it was going on everywhere.” Weiland seemed to be talking about how Seattle gets the most attention when it comes to the Grunge era. chloesdad said on BelowEmpty.com regarding Weiland’s rants, “Definitely went on rants that made little to no sense.”

Regarding new Pumpkins material & the upcoming Smashing Pumpkins album:

Nicole: Yes we are working on new music now.
Nicole: Yeah i think we would do another double album.
Nicole: it is not unlikely that dream machine will be on next record.

On the latest Smashing Pumpkins touring news:

Nicole: Hmmm, not sure about VIP for Europe. I can’t imagine why we wouldn’t.
Nicole: Yeah we will do another full scale US tour again, just doing the south now because we skipped it last year.
Nicole: I’m sure we will be back in SA. we love playing there. however after the euro tour we will be focusing on recording.
Nicole: We’ve only played quiet at the VIP shows. i would love to play it at a show though, great song. so fun.
On her band “The Cold & the Lovely” and her solo career:

Nicole: Cold and lovely is so much fun. i love playing with my girls and it is an honor to play with such amazing musicians. Meg has got more talent in her pinky finger than most artists out there these days.
Nicole: Yeah I really want to do a solo album. I think i will focus on that the next time I have a break, but I don’t think it will be anytime soon!
Above is a video from Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts’ show in New York on Saturday at Irving Plaza, butchering Stone Temple Pilots’ epic 8 minute Core album closer “Where The River Goes” followed by a cover of Jane’s Addiction’s “Mountain Song.” Sad to see one of my favorite STP songs performed like that, we as always are still rooting for Scott. He’s a great performer and good guy, but obviously something is not right about what’s been going on during this tour. Below is video of “Naked Sunday.”Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10813329872959627499noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7310272336526829356.post-30885361991155691822013-03-11T05:58:00.005-07:002013-03-11T06:00:15.197-07:00Performance featuring STP's Robert DeLeo, Slash, Steven Tyler & Joe Perry: SETLIST

Former Velvet Revolver/Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash also performed “Mama Kin” with them. Video of that song still hasn’t surfaced. This was the first time members of Scott Weiland’s two bands bands that he was fired from, Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, have performed together. Tyler introduced “Dream On” by jokingly saying, “Here’s a song we just wrote for this occasion, by Robert.”

This isn’t the first time Robert DeLeo has performed with Aerosmith members. Robert and Dean DeLeo performed with Steven Tyler on American Idol in May 2011. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry also joined Stone Temple Pilots onstage at the band’s iconic performance at Madison Square Garden in November 1996, a show that is widely regarded as one of STP’s best. STP have also opened for Aerosmith in the past, including a fall 2002 North American tour.
Scott Weiland challenged a fan to a fight at his show last night in New York at Irving Plaza. The fan had been heckling Weiland. Weiland called out the fan to come on stage, “So you’re fuckin’ pulling that fuckin’ like gun shit off on me? Then come up and meet me one on one man. You play tough guy from an audience behind a barricade. [talking to security guard regarding fighting him] I’d love to. Yeah, that guy. Trust me. And just don’t forget it guys like you fuckin’ waste your money. I mean, actually, let him stay here, and just get all fuckin’ riled up. He won’t be able to sleep tonight.”
